As you may have read a while ago, Patrick got a beta invitation for Quake Live by ID Software. I’ve played it now for about a week and I thought I’d share some thoughts about it with you. First of all I would like to say thank you for the beta key Patrick :)
In a nutshell, it’s Quake 3, but it’s web browser based, meaning you can play it almost anywhere without having to install it as long as the computer has the muscle for it. I haven’t tried it out on a really piss-poor computer yet but one of my friends were about to so I’ll just wait for his verdict. Speaking of friends, I have 4 out of 10 invitations left if anyone wants one.
They’ve made several improvements from Quake 3. Everything you do is collected as stats which is viewable from your profile page or the leaderboards if you manage to get on them. I’m currently on a kill/death ratio of 0.5 :( Loading screens are probably new. I don’t really know if they updated them in Quake 3 Arena. Everything tuns freaking smoothly as you would expect from a Quake 3 game, even if it’s browser based. I’m almost constantly on 125 fps which seems to be the limit (can anyone confirm this?).
The resistance varies greatly. To make it balanced, ID made a sort of matchmaking system where you could choose servers with players of the same skill level as you. You can however join whichever server you choose, so be prepared to meet godlike players or players that runs around shooting the ground all the time. I think all the old game modes are there, you can filter anything you wanna play to find servers faster which is awesome. You can join yout friends with a click if the server isn’t full of course, and there’s a chat system in the browser.
Graphics wise, you can change many different settings and you can play fullscreen. I’m playing in 1920×1200 fullscreen. It upscales some textures but the resolution itself is really what it says it is which you can see from my screenshots down there. I started playing in-browser so that’s why some of the screens are smaller.
ID thought of pretty much everything with this game. You’d have to nitpick to find anything bad. It’s a really awesome game and I would recommend it to anyone that’s played Quake 3 in the past or still does.
The good stuff
+ Web browser based
+ It’s free
+ Lots of customization/settings/stats
+ Runs smoothly
+ Fun as hell
+ Friendsystem
+ Easy to use
The bad stuff
- Matchmaking system isn’t perfect
- I’m really bad at this game :p (I’m a console gamer first hand damnit, I can’t use the mouse :D)
- Doesn’t work with all browsers (Yet. This is only a beta, remember?)
