OutRun Live Arcade
Most racing games today focus on one thing, and that’s the realistic aspect of racing. Where you have to sit down for ages to tune your car and buy new parts. Sure it can be fun to toy around with your brand new car, But sometimes you just want to forget all about the details and just go and do some racing. With Sega’s newest edition to the OutRun series you select a car, and if you want automatic or manual transmission then you go race, Simple just like an arcade racer should be.
OutRun Live Arcade is a pure arcade racing game. If you crash the only penalty you receive is the loss of speed and not a wrecked steel carcass. The game still only focus on one brand of cars, and that’s Ferrari models, And who don’t want to drive like a mad man in a million dollar car?
What matters most about arcade racers are the handling of the cars, and the visuals, And here OutRun Live Arcade really delivers even at the highest speed the visuals don’t disappoint, the frame rate never starts to drop down, and you really get that high speed feeling. The handling of the tuned cars can sometime stab you in the back, But you did pick a tuned car for the extra speed, so of course it’s harder to control.
There are a total of 15 different tracks you can race on, But you don’t pick a track and stick with it. You always start at the same track, but at the end of it you have to option to turn either left or right, the left track is always easier while the right one will test your skills. There is a huge difference between the tracks, from a typical beach scenery to deep wood and a crowded city, There is something here for everyone ( for some reason i was just waiting for the Rainbow Road track )
The single player sadly don’t have that much to offer. You have the OutRun mode where you need to race against the clock and reach checkpoints, Then we got the classic Time Trials. But the game type that stands out the most is Heart Attack Mode, In this mode the clearly thrill seeking suicidal blond chick riding with you screams out objectives for you to complete, it could be to drift like a mad man, collect coins, go through gates and so on. But other than that the single player falls short. You don’t really have any goal unless you are addicted to leaderboards. But it is in multiplayer where you have most fun where you can race to up till 5 of your friends ( limit on the multiplayer are 6 players ) The biggest let down in the game for me at least was the music, i suggest you use your custom soundtracks on this title.
The Verdict: So is the game worth the 800 Microsoft points? I say yes, but only if you have people on your friendlist with the game, Cause in the long run OutRun Live Arcade don’t last long in the single player, We did expect more.
